In Town With Little Water, Coca-Cola Is Everywhere. So Is Diabetes.

In a small mountainous town in Mexico, residents have running water once every two days while a local Coca Cola plant extracts more than 300,000 gallons daily. Counterbalancing the limited water supply is a superfluous amount of soda, resulting in skyrocketing rates of diabetes and morbidity rates of residents.

“’Indigenous people ate very simple food,’ said Mr. López, the activist, who spent years living with rural communities as a missionary. ‘And when Coke arrived, their bodies weren’t ready for it.’”
