Nutrition Education for Food Is Medicine Programs

Food Smarts for FIM

Deliver compassionate nutrition and cooking education, without building it yourself.

Food Smarts for FIM gives food banks, pantries, and community-based organizations a ready-to-use eLearning library for produce prescription and medically tailored grocery work. Participants learn online, on their own schedule, with support from your nutrition educator, registered dietitian, or coach. Leah's Pantry has built nutrition education around trauma-informed principles since 2006 — content that recognizes how stress and adversity shape health behavior, avoids shaming and blame, and centers participant dignity and choice.

A tested materials library: Lessons, videos, recipes, and handouts from Food Smarts and EatFresh.org, rebuilt for self-paced learning.

Yours to customize: Reorder modules and add your own content for the communities and languages you serve.

Virtual and asynchronous: No classroom, no fixed schedule. Reaches rural participants and people juggling caregiving.

Completion you can report: Track completion by participant and tie it to incentives, vouchers, or clinical follow-up.

According to the largest food-as-medicine evaluation to date, conducted by the Center for Nutrition and Health Impact and Feeding America (Calloway et al., 2026), participants who attended three or more dietitian-led nutrition education sessions saw the greatest clinical improvements — in blood sugar, cholesterol, and weight — of any group studied. The same evaluation found that dignity mattered as much as delivery: respectful, non-judgmental interactions significantly deepened engagement and improved outcomes. Nutrition education isn't a nice-to-have in food-as-medicine programs — done with trust and respect, the data says it's the difference-maker.
