Leah’s Pantry is a California non-profit organization that promotes healthier lives among low-income and food-insecure populations. We work with CalFresh-eligible individuals to support healthy, sustained behavior changes through interactive, effective, and culturally relevant programs delivered both in-person and online.

We also provide staff training to organizations that serve low-income individuals to build their capacity around nutrition education programming. Last, we ensure that the right tools exist to make these programs effective. Examples of tools developed and maintained by Leah’s Pantry include the Food Smarts curriculum, EatFresh.org, the EatFresh.org Mini Course, and cookbooks developed by community members.

Full job description

Leah’s Pantry is a non-profit whose mission is to improve the health, wellness, and resilience of our communities through trauma-informed nutrition security. Leah’s Pantry:

  • Cultivates nourished communities through direct work with low-income individuals. We provide trauma-informed experiences (both in person and online) that build resilience and healthy dietary behaviors. This work is centered in California.
  • Catalyzes organizational transformation by providing innovative training, technical assistance, and consulting that builds partner capability to implement trauma-informed nutrition initiatives. We have 300+ partners across the US. We work with public health departments, food banks and pantries, afterschool programs, medical clinics, senior centers, health clinics, and affordable housing providers.
  • Informs policy at all levels by promoting trauma-informed nutrition security at the county, state, and national level via working groups, collaboratives, and conference presentations.

Roles and Responsibilities

Leah’s Pantry is hiring a part-time Food Navigator to support food distributions at affordable housing sites. This position will be directly responsible for sites in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. This position will help support on-site food distributions for residents of affordable housing sites.

Duties will include (but are not limited to):

Food Navigator—Housing (4 sites)

  • Understand food security and basic needs of residents living in affordable housing communities.
  • Create relationships with residents to encourage program participation
  • Assist with on-site food distributions, including transportation of food, pre-bagging food, and both pantry-style and delivery-style distribution
  • Remind residents about upcoming distributions
  • Contribute ideas for improving the program

Qualifications

  • Relevant work experience or strong interest in the field of food security, public health, nutrition, or community organizing
  • Available to work on the 4th Tuesday of the month, the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Thursdays of the month between 8 a.m.–5 p.m. PST
  • Must live in or be willing to travel to multiple locations in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties
  • Bilingual candidates (especially Spanish, Russian, Persian, Cantonese, or Mandarin) and those with relevant lived experience are preferred but not required.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs, walk around, and stand for long periods of time (dollies and carts provided to assist)
  • Must have reliable transportation

Skills

  • High-level understanding of food security, food deserts, and basic needs
  • Proven skills in community and individual relationship-building
  • Some training or experience with trauma-informed care
  • Attention to detail, ability to multitask
  • Excellent people skills
  • Able to communicate complex information clearly

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $27.00 per hour

Expected hours: 6 – 12 per week
