Leah’s Pantry has recently launched trauma-informed nutrition security programs tailored for medical settings. The primary goal of this initiative is to decrease health inequities by improving the quality of clinic-based food and nutrition interventions.
As part of this initiative, we have developed a comprehensive training, “Approaching Nutrition Security with Compassion and Connection in Medical Settings,” designed for healthcare professionals interested in adopting a trauma-informed approach to nutrition security and patient conversations. We are also extending our training services to organizations interested in a trauma-informed approach to nutrition security and promoting Food as Medicine initiatives.
San Francisco Food As Medicine Collaborative
Our partnership with the San Francisco Food As Medicine Collaborative has evolved from virtual food demonstrations to live workshops. Each month, we conduct cooking demonstrations with supportive nutrition education at five health clinics during their Food Pharmacy distributions. We also prepare seasonal dishes using ingredients from the patients’ food prescription boxes and facilitate activities from the Food Smarts curriculum to foster meaningful conversations among participants about health and well-being.
Indiana Department of Health
The Indiana Department of Health has engaged Leah’s Pantry to conduct “Approaching Nutrition Security with Compassion and Connection in Medical Setting” trainings for various groups of clinicians across the state.
Leah’s Pantry has delivered presentations to audiences including primary care and behavioral health providers; primary care doctors, lactation consultants, labor and delivery nurses, obstetrics registered nurses, nurses, medical assistants, obstetricians, pharmacists, mental health providers, the Indiana Primary Health Care Association, Inc. (an advocate for quality health care for all persons residing in Indiana), the Indiana Department of Health Learning Collaborative, and the Indiana Breastfeeding Coalition.
