Food Smarts Waste Reduction for Kids provides children with a better understanding of how to get away from a take, make, and throw away linear model of food to a circular model of reuse, recycling, and composting food waste through developing cooking and food resource management skills. Lessons can be taught in the classroom or garden in a 5-session workshop series.Each 60-minute lesson includes:

Curriculum Objectives:
- Learn what happens when food is wasted and the importance of reducing food waste
- Increase their appreciation of food, the resources that go into producing it, and the multiple ways it can be used
- Adopt food consumption and utilization behaviors that reduce food waste
- Expand the variety of foods they will eat to overcome limited taste preferences that can lead to food waste
- Learn how to make food to their taste so they are less likely to discard food due to simply not liking it
- Learn how to reuse food scraps and leftovers in the garden and kitchen
- Reinforce and increase capacity for composting food scraps and recycling food packaging
