Food Smarts Adapted for Recovery

Overview

This evidence-based, adapted Food Smarts lesson plan is designed for leading a group workshop series in recovery settings. The interactive activities and discussions support participants’ food and nutrition literacy, nutrition security, and their reconnection to nourishing themselves and their families as they recover from substance use disorder.

Participant Goals:

  • Learn how to support health and substance use recovery with nutrition and lifestyle habits
  • Practice movement and mindfulness activities for self-regulation and to reinforce the mind-body connection
  • Learn time-saving, budget-friendly skills for shopping, planning, and meal preparation to sustain a healthy diet
  • Learn strategies for navigating the food environment

Activity Highlights:

  • Applying nutrition concepts to daily life and recovery
  • Practical food resource management skills
  • Cooking demonstrations or hands-on cooking

Audiences:

  • Adults (18+) recovering from substance use disorder

Settings:

  • In-Person (recommended)

Training Description

This unique training will equip participants to facilitate the Food Smarts Adapted for Recovery curriculum.  Participants will:

  • Learn how to implement the curriculum
  • Consider best practices for working in recovery settings
  • Explore the relationship between positive and adverse experiences and nourishment
  • Develop compassionate facilitation strategies
